Dr. Duron earned his medical degree at the University of Rochester, where he graduated with Distinction in Community Service in 2007. He completed his residency in general surgery in 2012 at Brown University Medical School/Rhode Island Hospital, receiving multiple research and teaching awards along the way, including the Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. He completed a fellowship in pediatric surgical critical care at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (2013), followed by a fellowship in pediatric surgery at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School (2015). Dr. Duron’s clinical and research interests include fetal and neonatal anomalies, minimal access surgery, and the treatment of critically ill pediatric surgical and trauma patients. His dedication to pediatric trauma patients extends beyond our borders and has led to his involvement in several global health projects in Russia, Cameroon, Malawi, Kenya, and beyond. In 2013, he co-founded the Iquitos Pediatric Surgery and Trauma Intervention Project in Peru, which he continues to direct to this day. At Columbia/NYP, Dr. Duron serves in multiple clinical leadership roles. He is co-Director of Fetal Therapy, Director of Pediatric Surgical Critical Care and Trauma, and Surgical Director of the Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Clinic. In his clinical work, he places an emphasis on developing protocols and evidence-driven measures to treat the sickest surgical patients. His research is focused on fetal diagnosis and treatment and on prospective studies in fluid management for critically ill patients. As an educator, Dr. Duron has been able to make an impact near and far. He serves as Director of the Pediatric Surgery Medical Student Subspecialty Clerkship at VP&S and is teaching faculty for the yearly national Advanced Minimally Invasive Course for pediatric surgery fellows and the international Minimally Invasive Surgery Masters Course for pediatric surgeons from around the world. His teaching also extends to the Mailman School of Public Health, where he lectures on global health and trauma. His expertise in these areas has earned him multiple speaking invitations around the country and globe and make him a valued member of several national and international committees and societies.
